WCAG 2.1 Contrast Requirements

Level AA — Normal Text

Requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1. Applies to body text under 18pt (or 14pt bold).

Level AA — Large Text

Requires at least 3:1. Large text is 18pt+ (or 14pt+ bold). Headings typically qualify.

Level AAA — Normal Text

Requires 7:1 for the highest accessibility standard. Recommended for critical content.

Level AAA — Large Text

Requires 4.5:1 for large text at the highest level. Best for maximum readability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What contrast ratio should I aim for?
For most websites, WCAG AA (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text) is the standard. AAA is ideal but not always practical for design. We recommend AA as the minimum.
Is color contrast legally required?
In many jurisdictions, yes. The EU European Accessibility Act, UK Equality Act, and US ADA all reference WCAG standards. Failing to meet these can result in legal liability.
My brand colors fail contrast. What do I do?
